We had a wonderful turnout of 62 dogs for the largest Welsh Springer Spaniel entry in the history of American Spaniel Club. As members of ASC, Rich and I thank you all for your support of this show. The feel of a "mini-Specialty" was in the air, with visitors and exhibitors traveling from all parts of North America. Welshies from the West Coast, South, Midwest and North were represented.

We witnessed a display of Welsh Springers that many breed judges and breeders only see once yearly at a National Specialty. There were more WSS entered in Best of Breed competition at this show than English Springer Spaniel "specials"...I think that's a sign of the growing popularity of the breed. In addition, many "friends" of the breed commented on the good sportsmanship and camaraderie displayed by all exhibitors. We're glad people noticed--it certainly contributed to the festive nature of the show.

Our 1998 ASC Best of Breed winner is Ch. Penri Tomas O'Killagay. Congratulations to his owners and breeders--Beth Holmes and Connie Christie own him, and Connie and Margaret Hilliard bred him. We'll all be looking for him at the Specialty this year! Kudo's also, to Colleen O'Keefe, who took Best of Opposite Sex with her lovely Ch. Lynlee's The Rose Tattoo. I was impressed with the overall quality of both the class dogs and the "Specials" presented to the judge. Temperament was outstanding, and the owner/handlers are to be commended on their skill in showcasing their dogs for the many spectators. For complete results, including WD/WB/BW/AOM, see the catalog.

The "Nerves of Steel" award goes to Mary Mandich, who was positioned at the head of the line of dogs in the final cut. Surrounded by professionally handled dogs, with tensions mounting, she and Rusty rose to the occasion and made a BEAUTIFUL picture of a breeder/owner/handler with her Welshie friend.

I am providing the MARKED catalog with notations for the two "judges' cuts". The files are saved in GIF format and may be displayed in your browser for viewing and printing. Click on each miniature page in the table below to view the corresponding catalog page. I have included the file size for each image, so you may judge how long the download process will take. If you prefer to download all the files at one time, I've prepared the file asc_98.zip (291 KB) for you to download and open using an unzipping program.

The Judges' Breed Seminar held on Saturday attracted  potential WSS Breed Judges, new Welshie owners and longtime breeders and exhibitors. At each seminar, I am introduced to a new aspect of the breed--my education is a never-ending process  My thanks go to Adrienne Bancker for her insights and photos of Welshies from all over the world. Please make sure you attend Adrienne's next breed seminar...you'll find it informative and useful in planning your breeding program.
