This year's ASC show for all flushing spaniels will take place on Friday, January 2 to Sunday, January 4, 1998 at the Meadowlands Hilton, Secaucus, New Jersey. Rare Spaniels will be judged on Sunday, January 4. Obedience judging and Junior Showmanship will take place on Friday, January 2. There are 65 WSS entered, and judging will begin at 10 AM in Ring 2.

Judge
Return to TOP of page

Our judge will be Mr. Lester Mapes, who was unable to join us in 1996 due to illness. Lester drew a large entry that year, and this year he has drawn another RECORD entry. The Welsh Springer Spaniel entry at this show is second only to the WSSCA National!

Breed Seminar
Return to TOP of page

As part of the weekend's activities, there will be a Judges Seminar on the Welsh Springer Spaniel, presented by Adrienne Bancker. If you would like to attend this informative presentation, you should plan to be available on Saturday afternoon, January 3, from 4-6 PM. The fee for the seminar is $20, payable at the door. There is a "hands-on" session planned at the conclusion of ACS judging later in the day. In addition, you will be entitled to a reserved seat at ringside on Sunday morning for Welsh Springer judging.

Besides seeing so many Welshies and breeders, there is the opportunity to browse the concession area for beautiful artwork, jewelry, stationary, and clothing items. Every year we beg vendors to carry Welshie items, and more vendors are listening to us. In addition, there is an artist available to make an airbrush painting of your dog. Jody uses a photo and paints on wood--remember to bring along a picture of your favorite Welshie and have a head study made during the weekend. Prices are reasonable and the quality is quite good.

For those of you who have never shown at ASC, it can be a bit intimidating both for you and your dog. There are three things you should make sure you do to really enjoy the show weekend:
1. Reserve crate space for your dog
2. Pay for an electrical hookup if you want to do any grooming
3. Reserve a copy of the catalog

CRATE SPACE
Return to

Make sure you have a place to put your dog when you arrive at the show--You MUST reserve crate space in the "tack room" using the form included with the premium list. Please do NOT bring unentered dogs--there is absolutely NO crate space for them. A "floor plan" of the tack room is posted--ask the Assistant Show Chairperson, Toni Mills, for your location if you are unable to find "your spot". If possible, set up your area either Friday nite or early Saturday, so your dog can get used to the room, with its noise, crowds of people, barking dogs, etc. Toni does make an effort to group the rare breeds together, so we're not surrounded by feverishly grooming American Cocker people... Check out the Rau Dog Shows Site for the crate reservation form.

ELECTRICITY

If you need electricity for grooming, you MUST pay for the electrical hookup, using a form included with the premium list. The price is about $20, and you should bring a long, heavy duty extension cord and a surge suppresor with a circuit breaker. You are not given a "private" plug--sharing is the name of the game. Remember to CLEARLY label your electrical equipment, or it could become lost.

CATALOG

Pay in advance for a catalog, and it will be waiting for you at a table in the lobby when you arrive. You may order more than one copy. I believe the price is $6 per catalog.

FORMS

Download this forms.zip file for ASC entries, crate reservations, power hookups, and catalog reservations. The file is about 300KB, so it may take a little while to download. Remember, you MUST send a copy of the entry form for each dog you make a crate reservation for, so print the entry form on your printer for each dog you enter. I've included BOTH sides of the entry form, so you can tape them together if you're using it to enter the show. The forms.zip file is compressed--download it to a directory and use an unzipping program to uncompress the forms you need. The forms are named entry1.gif, entry2.gif, crate.gif, and catalog.gif. If you have difficulty getting these forms, email us using one of our links and we'll send you the uncompressed files.

TROPHIES

As members of the American Spaniel Club, Rich and I support the trophy table by encouraging our friends to offer interesting and attractive prizes. This year we're featuring Linda Brennan's new book as a trophy. If you haven't bought one yet, you can try to win an autographed copy for yourself!

OBEDIENCE
Return to TOP of page

An obedience prize has also been donated, but we've been particularly under-represented in WSS obedience entries over the past few years. Come on, guys, don't make me drag Kayo out for a Novice Veterans class! Someone, PLEASE enter your dog! The show is wonderful for obedience--it's quiet, in a carpeted, chandelier-lit ballroom. Who could ask for more?
